2 Days Taita Hills Saltlick

Day 1: Mombasa – Taita Hills Salt Lick, Kenya

Leave Mombasa very early in the morning and drive to Taita Hills Game Sanctuary. Arrive in time for lunch at the Salt Lick Lodge. After a short rest we go out for afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight.

The Salt Lick Lodge is a unique lodge built atop stilts overlooking a waterhole – The exceptional architecture of small castles balancing on stone pillars is inspired by the indigenous Taita people’s mud hut with makuti (thatch) roof. The rooms are linked by suspended walkways under which elephants potter. It’s name (Salt Lick) is taken from its setting – a natural salt lick which was a congregating place for the neighborhood’s salt-hungry residents. The lodge is built such that all it’s rooms and restaurant overlook a waterhole which attracts a large array of wildlife including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks, baboons and impalas among others.

The lodge has an underground tunnel and bunker with ground-level windows that provide even more incredible and safe views of the buffaloes and other animals as they quench their thirst.

NOTE: Night Game Drive available at extra cost. These nightly drives give you a chance to see rare animals such as the jackal, civet, genet, bush baby, spotted and stripped hyenas and porcupines.
